Background - The Environment - With a database of 38,000 customers and over 20,000 active stock records, this is one of Southern Italy`s premier Retail outlets. Carrying prestigious brands such as Audemars Piguet, Vacheron Constantin, Piaget, Baume&Mercier, Breitling, Cartier, Montblanc, Recarlo, D&D, Mikimoto, Wedgwood, Royal Copenhagen, Big & Grondhal, Lalique, etc.
Background - The Requirements - The company planned to implement ArtsMagna business software to provide an integrated POS, Accounting and Stock management, and to enable Cisternino preziosi to extend enterprise applications via the Internet. The company decided to simultaneously upgrade its aging Honeywell mainframe DPS6000 system to a mixed LAN environment running Windows NT and MacOS to facilitate the increased demands of the powerful new software and also to ensure complete Y2K compliance.

Solution - The current solution is a Fast Ethernet network supporting the LAN on which there are NT Servers, NT Workstations and MacOS for a total of 16 computers plus laser printers, fax servers, BarCode Printers, Electronic Scales, VideoConferencing and Surveillance System. For the main application ArtsMagna Server we opted for a IBM`s Netfinity 3000 loaded with 512Mb Ram, an Adaptec 29040 UWSCSI 160Mb adaptor to control 3x9Gb and 1x18Gb all UW160Mb 10,000 rpm. The data was exported from the Mainframe and imported into the new Server. This system boasts an incredible degree of performance and reliability for such an environment allowing Cisternino preziosi to have on line transactions since day one of operation, millions of records in the Accounting Tables and a database of 20,000 Stock Items all with Images captured on the fly while items are purchased. This Solution has been running since August 1996 on a 24 x 7 base only going down for updates. Access to the WAN is provided through a Cisco 2601 Router/Firewall capable also of running Voice over IP and connected to a Proxy that prevents all incoming WAN traffic to the Business LAN while providing the LAN access to the WAN.
Result - The benefits to Cisternino preziosi are many. 90% of accounting's double entries are automatically posted by the system while the operators are running simple POS transactions. Management of Lay By Sales is totally integrated as well, demanding a very minimal degree of management as all reminders and interests are calculated and printed automatically without requiring staff intervention. The extension of the Stock to the WEB is also a transparent exercise thanks to 4D`s in built Web Serving capabilities. The degree of Stock control achieved through ArtsMagna is just sensational, allowing for easy reporting, automatic Purchase Orders generation, Agents recommendation and logistics control. |
