Background - The Environment - This is one of Bari's premier Jewellery shops. Third generation operations matched by multi stores and high demanding management, this is a business second to none when it comes to level of control and administration of Stock and Sales. Although Sinesi gioielli is generally associated with the high class shop in via Carulli, the company is a diversified business made up of three main divisions: Sinesi gioielli which specializes in high quality jewellery and loose diamonds, Oroshop which is a high volume inexpensive jewellery retail outlet and the only official Swatch Store in Bari.
Background - The Requirements- Replace a custom made database software developed in Informix 15 years ago and running on a Unix Server over Terminal clients with a more up to date system capable of integrating multimedia services and more complex reporting capabilities. Also Important was to simplify a very specific and sophisticated Stock logistics management capable of pinpointing any stock item to its exact location and weight including labels and containers, allowing for simplified inventory checks based on the total weight of the containers and daily price updates due to the fluctuations in the costs of the raw materials (gold, silver, diamonds and colored stones). Finally being able to integrate the running of the three separate businesses within the one Software.
Solution- Phase One consisted of installing the new Fast Ethernet LAN as the previous Unix/Informix system was working on terminals through serial cables. All previous terminals and printers were dismissed. An IBM Netfinity 3000, with 192Mb of Ram and 3x9Gb 80Mb UWSCSI hard disk, was chosen to be the ArtsMagna Server on which we installed NT Server. Also part of the LAN as Clients are two IBM NT Workstations, two laptops an IBM ThinkPad and a HP Omnibook, 4 iMacs plus Printers both Laser and InkJet and an Eltron CardPrinter. This is a very intensive and high volume of transaction business, adding on average per year of 30000 new Stock Items, individually assembled from components and pictures. A best-of-breed client/server system, ArtsMagna offers a dynamic, flexible, user-friendly and integrated merchandising solution. It delivers improved productivity, precision planning and coordination across all the different functions within a retail organization. ArtsMagna Statistics allow Merchandise Planning, Assortment Planning and Allocation. This module is centrally managed and stored by the Automatic Job Schedular on the database. Of particular importance to Sinesi was the real time capability within ArtsMagna, which allows different perspective viewing of Stock data through Analytic, Models (Groups), Components and Categories. The flexibility of ArtsMagna emerged also in the new way of handling the logistics as against the previous Unix/Informix system. The integration of the different branches presented no difficulties at all as it was already one of ArtsMagna's capabilities.
Result- The benefits to Sinesi are many. First of all we have been able to maintain all the existing quality of the previous custom made development while integrating all the new ones. Their current LAN is now based on the latest hardware/software and is ready to be ported to the WAN. ArtsMagna's analysis and reporting potential puts the old System to shame. The possibility to attach video, images and sounds to Stock items has opened up a variety of new ways to manage the stock changing and improving their business. The logistics management, once run by a specific employee, has been hugely simplified and it has become an ordinary inputting operation that anyone involved can do. ArtsMagna's integration with Accounting is also providing Sinesi with new tools that allow them to manage their Cash Flow in a totally new way allowing integration of the three different stores.
